User Guide to Progress Reports

What does phase of curriculum mean?

Each key stage in curriculum designer is broken up into years:
e.g. key stage 1 relates to years 1 and 2
Objectives are then linked to years.

When explaining the logic behind how reporting works, the years the objectives relate to are referred to as the ‘phase of the curriculum’. The reason we do this is to make a distinction between:

  • Academic years – i.e. cycles and periods: The concept of time passing
  • Year of the curriculum – i.e. phase: The concept of progression through the curriculum

This allows us to describe things as follows:
In academic year 16/17, Jimmy was in year 1 and he was studying phase 1 of the curriculum for maths.
Therefore, if we are look at reports for how Jimmy is performing in maths we would select:

  • Cycle:            16/17
  • Subject:         Maths
  • Phase of curriculum:    Year 1
